It's important to know though that choosing a duct work cleaning service that is not experienced with your type of heating and cooling system or one that does not use the proper equipment or processes can actually make the situation worse.
Here are some things you should consider when choosing an air duct cleaning professional:

Don't make the mistake of thinking all duct cleaning pros are the same. Have 2 or 3 companies provide you with an estimate for the work and what steps will be taken to ensure the safety of your possessions and family while work is being done.

Be sure that the pro has worked on systems like yours. Don't let them learn on your home.

Ask what procedures are taken to ensure the safety of your possessions, pets, and family members during the process. Make sure you are protected from anything harmful they may find in the duct work such as mold or other bacteria.

Check references! Be sure that others have had good experiences with the company or professional you are considering. You can check with the Better Business Bureau, the Office of Consumer Affairs, or your local county government to see if complaints have been filed. Also, check online reviews for the pro or company you are considering.

Keep in mind that no one can make claims that air duct cleaning will make your air quality healthier. The health benefits are unsubstantiated and any service person or technician who tells you that cleaning your air ducts will definitely make you feel better is giving you false promises. Some health conditions are worsened by poor air quality though so it is definitely possible that symptoms of illness can be alleviated or improved with cleaning of air ducts. Homeowners in the St. Louis Metro East area should contact Mt. Everest Air Heating & Cooling for superior cleaning and exceptional customer service.

Why You Need Stainless Steel Washing Machine Hoses

If you ask most people, they might tell you that the convenience of doing laundry at home is far from "convenient". Yet,it does beat taking it to the river, beating it on a rock or scrubbing it on a washboard, and then hanging it from a tree to dry. Today's homeowner has a "toss it in, toss to dryer, and then remove" mentality. Following the initial investment of washer and dryer units, many homeowners forget basic maintenance of their laundry room.

State Farm Insurance cites broken washing machine hoses as one of the leading reasons for homeowner claims each year. If this seems strange to you, then you should know that traditional machine hoses can wear out, burst and allow water to fill your home. Furthermore, water hammer problems can increase the likelihood that your hoses will wear out sooner than later.

Traditional washing machine hoses are made of thick rubber that can expand and contract from water filling and emptying the machine. Over time, the hoses can begin to break down in elasticity, causing them to eventually burst. Unfortunately, most homeowners are not aware of this fact and will allow rubber washing machine hoses to go unchecked for years, sometimes decades before inspecting them. For those who are aware of the fact that hoses can become worn and brittle, it may be extremely difficult to access the hoses behind large, heavy washer and dryer units. This can be especially true for older persons or persons with disabilities.

A good solution for the problem of old rubber washing machine hoses, even so called "reinforced hoses" is to replace your traditional rubber washing machine hoses with stainless steel mesh hoses, sometimes referred to as "NO-BURST" hoses. These mesh covered hoses act as a sleeve and keep the plastic tubing inside from expanding and contracting from changes in water pressure and hot and cold temperature changes. Think of the sleeve as a giant python that squeezes the hose to keep its shape instead of allowing the water pressure inside to expand it.

Stainless steel mesh hoses are readily available at your area home improvement center or local hardware store. The professional plumbing technicians at Tiger Plumbing Services, which serves the communities of Madison and St. Clair County in IL, can quickly install these hoses for those unable to reach the hoses or unsure as to how to change them. It is possible that you can replace the hoses yourself. Either way, you will also be getting the peace of mind that comes with knowing that you are one simple home improvement project closer to saving yourself and family from a possible water disaster.

One last note of caution; No type or brand of washing machine hose is impervious to leaks or rupture. Even a stainless steel mesh braided hose is susceptible to rupture when not properly connected and periodically inspected for leaks or tears to the mesh. Having your home inspected by a professional plumber annually or at least every few years is your best course of action to ensure the safety of your home and family valuables from flood damage.

Warm Water, Warm Wallet, and Warm Heart

Insulating pipes as well as your water heater can help you save on your energy bills. A water heater blanket is simply a specially formed blanket of insulation that you fit over and around your hot water heater to maintain temperature when not in use. Plumbing insulation helps heated water inside the pipes to stay as warm as possible. Think of it like this, running hot water through cold pipes causes the water inside to cool down. By the time water reaches its destination, you may have to add more hot water to maintain the temperature you want. Thus, the water heater uses additional energy to heat more water and you are wasting energy and spending more money than you want to spend.

The National Renewable Energy Labs show that 15 to 25 percent of your home's energy cost is used to heat water. That's a big percentage of your energy costs. If you are trying to find ways to save on your fuel costs, (and who isn't these days), adding a water heater blanket and insulating your water pipes is a small way you make a difference in your expenses.

I often have customers ask about little things they can do to save money in their homes when they just don't have the resources to make major investments such as the incredibly energy efficient tankless water heaters we offer. If you have found yourself in this situation and won't be able to take advantage of the great tax incentives available on Energy Star rated energy efficient tankless water heaters, adding a hot water heater blanket and insulation to your pipes could be a good money saving idea for you.

Water heater insulating blankets and the insulation recommended for wrapping your pipes are all available at prices that can pay for themselves in just a couple months of energy savings. In fact, if you know the amounts and sizes, you can probably pick this up at your local home center. I would strongly recommend that you ask a professional plumber, like the trained specialists at Tiger Plumbing Services in Madison and St. Clair Counties in IL, to do this for you to ensure that you properly install both the water heater blanket and the pipe insulation. Sure, it really isn't hard but the improper placement of a blanket near the heating element can cause serious or even deadly consequences. Many DIY-ers have actually caused more harm than good to their home's plumbing simply because they really had no clue what they were doing.

Insulating your home's traditional hot water heater and the pipes carrying that water throughout your home is a good idea. The small savings each month on your home's energy expenses can really add up. If it were me, I would try to bank that difference to eventually upgrade to a tankless water heater to really boost your energy savings. It's a small step towards making your home and your wallet more green.

<fb:like href="http://tigerplumbingservices.blogspot.com/2010/11/warm-water-warm-wallet-and-warm-heart.html"></fb:like>

Is Your House Haunted? Before you call an exorcist, try calling a plumber.

The noise you are hearing may be a situation known as Water Hammer. Water Hammer occurs when flowing water is suddenly stopped. When water rushing through pipes suddenly hits a closed valve, a loud banging occurs which can cause a loud, wall-shaking bang and could cause extensive damage to your pipes. I even found one example that explained it like this: "Think of a speeding car slamming into a brick wall". Yikes! Over time, you can see how the repeated water pressure slamming back into pipes could cause serious damage to your pipes, causing them to leak or rupture.

A few of the most common causes of Water Hammer include:

Improper pipe sizes for your water pressure.

Unusually high water pressure from your supplier or well pumps with no pressure-reducing valve.

Pipe straight runs that are long without any bends.

Poorly secured pipes.

Well, now that we have ruled out the supernatural, it's good to know some possible solutions to the problem.

Older homes have often been fitted with air chambers fitted with risers that can become waterlogged and may need to be cleared manually of debris from hard water, bacteria, and other mineral buildup. When they have become waterlogged though, it is time for replacement with a newer device to help alleviate water pressure. In most cases, newer homes are not equipped with air chambers due to the health risks of bacteria build up on water deposits and inability to get to the chambers inside walls without causing extensive
damages and costs. In some cases, a professional plumber may advise a pressure regulating valve be added to your piping. A pressure regulator monitors and adjusts accordingly to your home's water pressure. Many municipalities now require these devices to be installed as a safety precaution.

If you hear the loud banging water hammer noises, it is best to contact a reputable, professional plumber such as Tiger Plumbing Services to find the point of origin for the noise and to explain the options in greater detail for you. If the plumber says it isn't Water Hammer, then you may indeed be haunted.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tigerplumbingservices.blogspot.com/2010/10/is-your-house-haunted-or-is-it-your.html' title='Is Your House Haunted? Take for example, the classic bungalow styled home built in the 1940's that I was fortunate enough to own for several years.

The homes' small bath boasted a cast iron tub, bright white fixtures and a small cabinet mounted sink. I was even fortunate enough to have glazed ceramic tile in great condition. I adored the large cast iron tub, just perfect for evening soaks, that allowed me to sit leisurely, a book in hand, candle softly flickering, keeping my water a perfect temperature. I found the glossy ceramic tile a dream to clean with an easy once a week scrub. I also liked the lovely glass block window that allowed morning light to spill in while getting ready for my day but provided enough coverage to block passers-by a view inside. Yes, that little pink cottage bath was actually quite enjoyable in some ways.

However, the bath did have some problems. The tub was cursed with some stains of unknown origin and scratches, old and ugly faucet fixtures, ceramic tile that was Pepto Bismol pink, and the only storage available was inside the vanity cabinet. The only solution was to move. Well, not exactly. I didn't move to a new home; I moved into a plan of action that would allow me to update my small bath in the least amount of time on an equally small budget. With $500 dollars and a weekend to work with, I began a modest little bath renovation. I began with the vanity area. The primary source of my frustration was a lack of storage, a dated and worn looking faucet, and the original contractor grade mirror. Despite the great natural light in the bath, the original ceiling fixture was dated and actually rather ugly. All of these needs were applied to a shopping list.

2 Faucets

A Mirrored Medicine Cabinet for added storage

Modern Lighting

Storage Bins

A 2 rod towel bar

Professional grade tub cleaner

I also decided to spruce up the vanity further by adding new hardware if my budget would allow.

And voila', 2 days later with my purchases applied and a quickly scheduled appointment with Tiger Plumbing Services, which services Collinsville and the surrounding Madison and St. Clair County communities, I was looking at a much nicer and newer version of my cozy little bathroom.

It actually was a pretty simple process. Just some modern updates, some serious elbow grease on the tub and tiles, and it was beautiful. The price of the plumber to install the faucets was the biggest cost of course, but the peace of mind that came with knowing I was saving time and the cost of purchasing tools for the job made the decision to call in a pro an easy one.

I loved that little bath. Later, I eventually decided on wallpaper to compliment with the pink tile instead of tearing it all down and replacing it. A matching shower curtain made the room feel larger even though it wasn't. I eventually sold that home and got top dollar back before the real estate market tumbled. I like to think that the nice "vintage modern" styling of the bathroom contributed to the fast sale of that house. Whatever the reason though, I just know that it was easy to do and I miss it sometimes.

5 Things To Know When Hiring a Plumber

Tweet Hiring a plumber is often a quick decision for many homeowners. When a plumbing problem occurs, most homeowners will grab a local phonebook or search an online directory for the list of available options. Sometimes the decision is an adaquate choice, sometimes it is not. If you have ever paid high plumbing prices for work that later proved to be unsatisfactory and required yet another plumbing call, you know the value in making the best choice the first time.

Knowing some simple things to ask before hiring a plumber can save you money and a big headache later.

1. Pay attention to the way your call or inquiry is responded to. Is your call answered by someone who seems interested in your problem? Are policies, service fees, or other information explained to you at the time of your call? Does the person taking your inquiry ask you questions about the problem or the severity of the issue? Finally, does the person on the call or responding to your online Request For Service seem to want to help you? If you can't say "yes" to these questions, then you should keep looking.

2. Did your plumber or service technician arrive on time? To some people, this may seem silly. However, if you arrange a window of time for the appointment and your plumber doesn't arrive, it is within your right as a consumer to keep looking or call another plumber. Now, I don't mean that if your technician arrives 2 minutes late, you should refuse to let him or her do the work for you. What I do mean, however, if your plumber is supposed to be at your business or residence and they can't pick up the phone to tell you they are running 30 minutes or more late from another service call, they probably aren't able to understand complicated plumbing issues well enough to fix your problem anyway. A reputable and customer service oriented plumbing company will contact you or have someone representing the company such as a dispatcher contact to notify you of a problem and allow you to decide how you want to proceed.

3. Does your technician greet you at the door and take precautions to ensure the safety and security of your home and family by wearing proper uniform, company identification such as a company marked vehicle and photo identification? Know who you are letting into your home. Many reputable companies will let you know in their advertising that their employees are background checked, drug tested, licensed, and insured so you know that the plumber entering your home is qualified and safe to have in your home and around your loved ones.

4. Does the plumber seem comfortable answering your questions? Does he or she seem interested in what measures you may have already taken to correct the problem, if any? Does he pay attention to what you are saying? Unless water is pouring from your walls or ceiling, you don't want a plumber who is going to charge in like a bull without asking you any questions or providing you with any information first. What about written estimates or up front pricing information. If the plumber charges by the hour, what is the hourly rate? How are partial hours determined? Does the rate include parts? If not, what will those costs be? If the plumbing technician quotes you a rate, such as in the case of contractors who charge by the job, not by the hour, ask if that price includes parts and equipment. What happens to flat rate pricing if they run into problems during the job? Knowing this information up front is a sign of a reputable plumber. You may not like the amount, (who likes to spend good money for less than fun things?) but you should know the amount up front with no hidden charges.

5. Lastly, does the plumber make recommendations to you on other possible issues? Does he or she offer you ways to cut costs such as Service Club Memberships, online discounts, or tell you where to look for valuable coupons in order to save you money on your next call? Does he or she let you know how to reach him when he leaves in case of a problem? Many reputable companies will want to put stickers on your water heaters, tag your water supply lines, and/or provide you with magnets or business cards so you can get ahold of them when you need a plumber again. Having this information can be very helpful and can provide you with great peace of mind the next time you need to consider a plumbing professional.

Following these guidelines will ensure that you hire the right plumber for your job. Feel free to shop around if possible. You will quickly see the difference between a bad plumbing company and a good one.

Why You Need to Know Where Your Main Shut Off Valves are Located

Tweet Another earthquake struck the Pacific today, this time just 90 miles off the coast of the Fiji Islands. The magnitude 6.2 earthquake joins 4 previous significant earthquakes registering over 6.0 in recent weeks. This got me thinking about earthquake and other disaster preparedness strategies for my home and family.

One of the best things to do in case of an earthquake (or other disaster) is to know the location of your home's shut off valves for water and gas lines. Intense shaking or shifting of the ground, your home's foundation, and walls can cause important pipes to break or leak. This poses a significant threat to your families safety and security so you need to know how to stop possible exposure to water and gas.

Water - the main shut off valve for you water line is usually located in the basement or garage of a single family home. In some cases, such as older homes, the main line shut off may be outside. It will be a larger pipe than other water lines and is usually affixed with a handle or a valve which may require a wrench to close. By turning the handle or valve, you will shut off the source of water to your home. This will stop any rushing water that may have resulted from pipe leaks or ruptures. Apartment dwellers should check with their landlord to see if there is one main water line for the building or if each individual apartment has a separate shut off. In an emergency, you may need to shut off water to the entire building if separate apartment lines are not available.

Gas - Following an earthquake, it may become necessary to shut off the gas supply to your home. Leaking natural gas poses serious health concerns as well as the strong likelihood of an explosion or fire. The gas line main shut off will be located near the gas meter. You might find it difficult to identify the shut off as the valve may look so similiar to the surrounding pipes. If your home is older, you may have a shut off valve located outside your home. You may even have difficulty shutting off a line if you do not have the proper tools on had to handle the task.

Having a complete plumbing inspection of your home will help you know the specifics of where your main shut off valves are located and how to close them properly in the safest way. Tiger Plumbing Services serves the IL communities of Madison and St. Clair Counties and provides a complete plumbing inspection on every service call they do. During that inspection, the main line shutoff valves will be tagged so you know where they are and one of the plumbing technicians will be happy to show you how to shut them off properly. While Tiger hopes none of its customers will ever face a need to shut off utilities to their home due to a disaster such as an earthquake, they want you to know what to do just in case. Be sure to ask about a Free plumbing inspection and the tagging of your emergency shut offs when contacting a plumber near you. If that plumber doesn't offer a plumbing inspection that includes this important service, then you need to keep shopping to find a plumber that not only can handle your specific plumbing problem but also cares enough about your home and family that they can help you when you may actually need it most; when they aren't there with you.

I hope that the major earthquakes and the aftershocks from them will subside sooner than later. I dread seeing the devastation caused by these disasters in countries where building codes are far less strict than those in the United States. I also hope that with a little careful planning and preparation, my home and family will benefit from knowing where my main line utility shut offs are located. But, this amount did seem like quite alot to me. Of course, I began thinking of where someone displays such a purchase. Do you actually use the toilet? I wonder who they will be calling to install or repair the new celebrity "loo"?

Based on the appearance of the Lennon toilet, I have to wonder how one would design or decorate a bathroom that featured such prestigious porcelain? I also wonder how many of Lennon's famous songs were actually written on the toilet tissue kept next to this pop potty? I wonder if Lennon's Berkshire home, from where this toilet was removed in 1980 following his death, had a plunger that could be auctioned for far less money than the toilet itself. Hmmm....where is my Beatles tee shirt?

5 Good Reasons to Use Water Alarms in Your Home

Water damage is costly and can even cause health problems for you and your loved ones. By notifying you right away when water is present, a water alarm informs you when water is present so that you can take necessary precautions for your home and family and contact a plumber or other service technician right away to address the problem.

Here's five good reasons you should add a water alarm to your home.

1. Foundation Leaks - Even if you have never experienced water in your home's basement before, keep in mind that as your home ages, it is possible for concrete and older block foundations in some areas to settle and cause small cracks in floors or walls that can allow water to seep slowly into your home. Even a relatively new home can become subject to leaks when changes to landscape in the area occur. These can include road construction, new homes being built near yours, your neighbor's new landscaping, and many other situations.

2. Mold and Mildew - Mold and mildew will grow in high humidity areas caused by smaller leaks that may go unnoticed for months or even years. A health concern, mold can cause potentially life threatening illnesses to you or your family members. Mildew will leave your home with a sour smell that is nearly impossible to get rid of without replacement of carpets, tile board, and often the subflooring itself. A simple water alarm in areas such as a laundry room, utility room, under cabinets, or other places where water can sit unnoticed can save you money and your health.

3. Sewer/Main Line Backups - Anyone who has ever experienced the pain of having to replace carpeting, furniture, wall coverings, and other items due to a finished basement being flooded with sewage will tell you it is not a pleasant scenario to find yourself in. Knowing as soon as possible is often the only defense against major expense and possible health concerns.

4. Appliance Damage - Having a water alarm at the base of a refrigerator, deep freezer, or other large appliance can save you the expense of replacing a unit that has had a water line leak or damage to its interior mechanisms due to water exposure. In addition, a leaky ice maker or water line can slowly seep into your flooring and cause tile or hardwoods to buckle, ruin finishes, and more.

5. Frozen Pipes - During the cold winter months, your pipes are susceptible to freezing which causes them to break. The resulting water deluge can be quite costly to repair and can be costly in water usage charges too.

Tiger Plumbing Services services the St. Louis Metro East area and provides water alarms at minimal cost. We recommend you have a few of these in your home in any area where you may experience water problems. Consider your needs including basements, crawlspaces, laundry rooms, under your cabinets where plumbing is, under aquariums. under water beds and more. The minor cost of a water alarm, which runs on simple 9 volt batteries, will provide you with peace of mind that your home and family are properly protected.

Save Water & Money By Installing a Low Flow Showerhead

Tired of banging on the bathroom door, policing the amount of water being used while family members take a shower? Does your frustration max out while your teenage daughter takes 30 minute showers? Does your family suddenly have other plans for family dinner on the day the water bill comes? Well, you are not alone. Many of our customers complain of this problem. Our solution? Try installing a low flow showerhead.

What is a Low Flow Showerhead you ask? A low-flow showerhead is a water-saving shower head that produces water at 2.5 gallons per minute or less at normal household pressure. There are low-flow showerheads that produce as little as 1.6 GPM. A 10-minute shower with a low flow showerhead uses only 16 to 25 gallons of water.

You should know that showerheads flow rates are measured by the number of gallons of water they produce per minute (GPM). Flow is determined by water pressure as well as the design of the showerhead. Typical showerheads deliver 5 to 8 gallons per minute at average household pressure. A ten-minute shower uses 50 to 80 gallons of water. No wonder you are paying so much!

An aerating showerhead mixes air into the water. Mixing in air helps to maintain a constant water pressure. A non-aerating showerhead produces a stronger spray, because there is no air mixed in with the water. One quarter of household water usage is shower usage. Using low flow showerheads reduces the consumption of water dramatically while maintaining steady and comfortable water pressure. I like to think of my aerating type low flow shower head as a steady, comfortable rain coming down. Bliss.

By installing a low flow showerhead in your bathroom, you will help the environment by conserving water consumption, you will save money on your water bills, and you can finally relax a little when the mail comes. Your family will definitely thank you!

The service technicians at Tiger Plumbing Services are fully trained and experienced in the installation of low flow showerheads. They knew beyond a doubt that the bills weren't representative of their actual usage, and no matter how they tried to conserve, the high bills continued.

Although they could see nothing wrong, they had everything checked for leaks or problems: first the water meter , thenoutdoor pipes, indoor pipes, underground pipes, faucets, toilets, washer, ice maker, etc. -- all to no avail.

One day Rick was sick and stayed home in bed, but kept hearing water running downstairs. He finally tore himself from his sick bed to investigate, and stumbled onto the cause of such high water bills. Apparently this had been happening all day long when they were not at home. Knowing that few would believe him, he taped a segment of the 'problem' for posterity.

Why You Shouldn't Install Your Own Water Heater

Need a new hot water heater? In today's tough economy, you may be thinking of doing the job yourself to save on labor costs. Keep in mind though that hiring a licensed plumbing contractor provides you, your home, and your family, a safety and security you can't afford NOT to have. Here are some really great reasons not to install your own hot water heater.

Some local codes and ordinances may not allow self-installation due to safety issues.

You may void the unit's warranty if you do not have the water heater professionally installed.

You may not select the right water heater for your needs and specifications. You can't simply just replace a 50-gallon hot water heater with another 50-gallon model. There are thousands of water heater types available and you'll want an experienced professional to help you think about energy efficiency, venting and anticipated use and frequency of usage.

The average homeowner doesn't have the proper equipment or tools to attach fittings, proper ventilation, properly tighten valves to ensure safety. Maybe it's because I'm truly a romantic at heart. Whatever the reason, I thought this idea for wedding attire was inspiring. Toilet paper wedding dresses! Yes, I've seen the websites where duct tape prom dresses won big scholarships for college bound high schoolers. But I have to admit, a wedding gown constructed entirely of toilet tissue was a new one!

Recently, the website, cheap-chic-weddings.com, sponsored a contest inviting contestants to create & submit wedding gowns made entirely of toilet paper. At first, the idea of a garment in which the wearer would vow to love, honor and cherish another person being constructed of such a disposable kind of material well, rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, it is SO different from what one expects when joining friends or family to witness a couple exchanging vows. Once I saw the creations though, I completely changed my point of view! Not only were the gowns stunning to behold, they also possessed an eco-friendly sensibility that I had to admit was brilliant to behold. I love the idea of a Cottonelle gown, or a designer 3 ply Charmin gown. Of course, I imagine the Quilted Northern designs are particularly expensive and comfortable to wear. Angel Soft denotes visions of ethereal beauty at a modest, more budget minded price. Yes, I could go on and on but you get the point.

I would certainly not recommend a toilet paper gown for every bride to be. Such a gown is truly special and unique. While considering all of the possibilities for a toilet tissue bridal gown, I envisioned a lovely and patient bride waiting at the alter for her on-call plumber fiancee. Running in from a particularly difficult drain clog service call, Mr. Plumber proudly sports high waisted pants, a crisp uniform shirt emblazoned with his name, and of course, a particularly dapper necktie made from the finest of printed toilet tissue. I think I could arrange such a beautiful union of 2 people in the shop area of Tiger Plumbing Services. I really could be onto something here...

<iframe src="http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=www.tigerplumbingservices.blogspot.com&layout=standard&show_faces=false&width=450&action=like&font=arial&colorscheme=light&height=35" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="border:none; The work and time that goes into preparing the ground, planting, weeding, and nurturing a garden is rewarded with fresh and healthy flowers, vegetables and herbs. While most of us will not go hungry if we don't plant a garden every summer, having fresh fruits and vegetables from our own garden is still a great way to reduce your food costs as well as live a "greener" lifestyle.

I enjoy planning a garden, digging in the dirt, and even the great stress relief of pulling weeds. I adore the simplicity of being outside watering the plants while inspecting them for pests as well as new growth. It allows a great break from the hustle and bustle of my everyday life. I mean, it is pretty hard to be stressed in the garden. Gardening can increase my water bill though so I take steps to ensure that I am doing what I can to conserve while at the same time gaining benefits of having a garden.

One of the best ways to conserve water while gardening is to water during the coolest part of the day. Water quickly evaporates during the hotter parts of the day so it is better to water during the coolest part of the day such as the early morning hours or the early evening hours. The water is then able to penetrate the soil and nourish your plants instead of just floating off into the atmosphere. Remember when your mom told you to close the door to the house so you weren't "cooling the whole neighborhood"? Well, it is sort of the same thing with water. There is no need to water the air. Just water the plants.

Another way to keep your water from evaporating is to mulch around your plants. Not only does mulching help keep weeds out of your garden, it also helps keep your soil from drying out too quickly. About an inch of mulch (or compost) is a good amount to keep your plants comfortable ans still allow water to reach the roots of the plant.

Be sure to select varieties of plants that perform well in your area. Some plants or varieties of those plants grow well in drier climates so I like to include them in my garden. Specifically, I try to plant flowers that are drought tolerant and can withstand long periods without watering. This allows me to focus my watering on fruits and veggies, which I grow fewer of. Of course, if you prefer to grow more vegetables or fruits and wonder which ones are the best for drought tolerance, be sure to read the labels or ask a professional at your local plant nursery for advice.

You could also try using a soaker hose or drip irrigation system for watering your garden. These use up to half as much water as a regular garden sprinkler. I like this option because I can only water what I want to water, make sure the water soaks down to the roots, and I am sure not to water the house, windows, or sidewalks near my garden. Another option would be to install a timer that screws into your hose and only allows the water to run for a specified length of time. This can also help if you want to stop watering so water can soak into the soil and then check to see if you need to add more.

Don't over water! You probably don't need to water all afternoon or all morning. If you aren't sure how long to water, place a shallow pan in the garden when you water. When the pan is full, you have probably watered enough. In addition to wasting water, over watering causes your plants to have more shallow roots and they become more likely to develop diseases too.

Irrigation systems are popular in some parts of the country or more expensive homes with larger areas of landscaping. By setting the time and length of time to water, they are nice because they take the guess work out of watering. But if you aren't careful, these systems can cost you a lot of money in water usage. Irrigation systems should be professionally inspected annually. Leaking and misdirected sprinkler heads just waste water and won't do much to help your gardening efforts.

Growing a garden in rewarding in many ways. You will benefit from increasing fruits and veggies in your diet. You'll also save money by growing some of the foods you would normally purchase from a grocer and, if you are mindful of your water consumption, you can still conserve water and save money!

During the summer months, the best way to cool down and beat the heat is to take a dip in the pool or nearby lake. This has me thinking about water! And because I'm a mom, this has me thinking about water safety for my family. Did you know that a leading cause of injury related deaths is drowning? Second to motor vehicle accidents, drowning is also twice as likely to occur in children under 4 years of age and a staggering majority of those deaths actually occur in the home! Such a tragic reality when many accidental deaths could be prevented! Swimming accidents account for many of the deaths from drowning that occur each year. Whether these accidents occur in the family pool, at a friend or neighbor's pool, or a nearby lake, there are some things that you should remember to help prevent drownings.

First of all, if you own a swimming pool or your neighbor does, be sure that you know where your children are at all times. In addition to having a locked fence around the pool, pool alarms, and other pool safety accessories, you might consider having door alerts or alarms installed on your home's doors, windows, and/or sliding glass patio doors if you have them. A door alarm will alert you when a door or a large window has been opened enough for a child to exit. Do not assume that because your toddler is unable to open the door today, that he or she will not be able to tomorrow or in the very near future. Every year, parents whose children suffer from accidents or drowning deaths say they didn't even realize the child had left the house. It is so easy to turn your back to take a phone call, complete housework, or even answer the doorbell and look back to find that your child has decided to try something new and exciting for them.

When your children swim, be sure to swim with them or supervise them as closely as possible. Specifically, it is ideal to be within arm's reach of your child at all times. If you cannot be in the water with your child, be sure to remain focused on your child. Never leave a child in or around water. Running in for more iced tea, sunscreen, or just to grab the mail can prove deadly. Take your child inside with you. Many parents wrongly assume that a child in trouble will make some kind of noise or motion to indicate they are in trouble. Sometimes, it only takes a minute for a child to get into trouble in the water, and many times, there are no obvious indicators. Don't rely on flotation devices like arm floaties, inflatables, or other children to keep your child safe in the water. Young children who are under 5 years of age and are not able to swim should always wear PFD (Protective Flotation Device) life vests while in the water. It is also a good idea to have your child take swimming lessons once they are 3 or 4 years old.

I know, you might be thinking, "Of course, people with swimming pools should be careful and prevent accidents! But I don't have a pool and neither does anyone else in my neighborhood. I don't need to worry about drowning accidents." Not true! Every year, regardless of the season, small children can be in danger of drowning in their very own homes. Think about everyday things in your home. The bathtub is a common place where kids can have water accidents. Always be sure to drain a bathtub when you or your child get out. Keep toilet lids closed and install toilet lid locks to keep curious toddlers from falling in. While this doesn't seem possible, a small child can drown in less than a gallon of water. That means that your home's sinks, tubs, and even buckets of water being used for everyday household cleaning can be a drowning hazard to a young child.

One final thing you should do, and maybe the most important, is to know CPR in case an accident should occur. The Red Cross, YMCA, and many local community centers offer lifeguard and CPR training all year long and many of the programs are free of charge. Even if there is a small charge for a lifesaving class, the class will pay for itself a million times over if you are called on in an emergency situation to help save a child's life. You should also keep emergency phone numbers near your phone, near the pool if you have one, and make sure you know what to do to best aid a child in trouble in the water. Teach your children at an early age that water safety is very important and that they should NEVER enter water without an adult present. Knowing not to go into the water without an adult may not keep them out of the water, but thinking about what you said could keep them out long enough to alert you to their interest and ultimately, could save their lives.

Think about water safety in and around your home this summer. Take precautions, properly maintain your home, and call Tiger Plumbing Services if we can do anything to help make your home more comfortable. I'll be making sure my own family is safe and happy while I keep looking for more "home comfort" news you can use. It makes me feel good to conserve resources for future generations and it always makes me happy when I open a water bill that is less expensive than the previous one. In many parts of the country, water conservation is critical. During the hot summer months, water supplies run dangerously low in states like California and Arizona. While I'm fortunate to live in the Midwest where folks don't often worry about actually running out of water, I'm watching and learning from my friends in those states as a way to keep my water usage down and ultimately, save myself money.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jVEBWDXd-ok/TCTiRpU0YmI/AAAAAAAAAC0/Yrkrb_uQAKA/s1600/barrelsrain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; My first impulse was to break out the hose and water of course. But I've recently learned a few interesting facts about water usage. For example, did you know that running the sprinkler in your yard for 2 hours can use up to 500 gallons of water? Since learning that bit of information, I've made some changes in how I think and act on the problem of brown grass and wilted blossoms.

One of the things that I've implemented is to install a rainbarrel. It's so easy to catch the rain that falls generously from the sky and use that water to quench the thrist of my flowering plants. I've found other uses for my collected rainwater too. Rainwater makes a good car washing alternative as well. My boys can have fun throwing buckets of water all over each other, while somehow managing to run soapy sponges over the car to get it shiny and clean.. They love cooling off this way and I can feel good that they are having a great time while not sending my water meter into full tilt. There are a wide variety of rainbarrels on the market these days, allowing you to choose the best size and style for your needs.

Of course, rainwater collection, or harvesting, as it is often referred to, can be a simple process of adding a rain barrel like I've done to my home's landscaping to a more complex system of water collection in cistern or underground containment units that is then connected to a filtration system in your home, allowing you to use the water for many of your household needs. Whatever your budget for implementing such a project, there is a solution for your needs.

Whatever option you decide to go with, large or small, will impact your water usage and save you money. You will also be shifting to a "greener', more "earth-friendly" lifestyle. You can feel good about that. I know I felt great when my last water bill was a bit lower than expected. It's a step in the right direction that benefits us all.

<iframe src="http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=www.tigerplumbingservices.blogspot.com&layout=standard&show_faces=false&width=450&action=like&font=arial&colorscheme=light&height=35" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="border:none; It's more like, Yes, we have hot water and it comes from
the faucet. But lately, Ive been learning quite a bit about plumbing and things
like how to save money on utilities. Turns out, the type of water heater my
home has is pretty important and something that, as a homeowner, I should know
more about.

For example, did you know that within the last few years, a variety of water
heaters have become available directly to consumers? There are now several types
of water heaters on the market: conventional storage, demand, heat pump,
tankless coil, indirect, and solar. The differences and choosing the right system
for your family's use is key to saving you money.

Standard storage water water heaters are the most common type of water heater in
the United States today. Ranging in size from 20 to 80 gallons (75.7 to 302.8
liters), a storage water heater operates by releasing hot water from the top of
the tank when the hot water tap is turned on. To replace that hot water, cold
water enters the bottom of the tank, ensuring that the tank is always full.
Because the water is constantly heated in the tank, energy can be wasted even
when no faucet is on. Referred to as standby heat loss, this type of system uses
energy to heat water that isnt being used is obviously not the most efficient. The good news
regarding the standard storage water heater is that newer, more energy efficient
options are available for you. To determine the most energy-efficient model,
consult the EnergyGuide label required on storage water heaters. EnergyGuide
labels show either the annual estimated cost of operating the system or the
units'energy efficiency ratings.

Once I knew about the wasted energy spent on heating water in a standard tank, I thought about going
with a Demand Water Heater. These units eliminate standby heat losses from the tank and reduce
energy consumption 20% to 30% and do not have storage tanks. Cold water moves through a pipe into the
unit, and either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water only when
needed. The most beautiful thing about demand systems is that you never run out
of hot water. With 2 kids in my house, I thought this was my answer. But wait,
there was more to know. One potential drawback with demand water heaters is
called limited flow rate. The flow rate of demand heaters is around 2 to 4 gallons per minute.
This flow rate might suffice if your household does not use hot water at more than one location
at the same time (e.g., showering and doing laundry simultaneously). As a single mom with 2 kids,
ranging from 3 to 13, multi-tasking is my middle name. The demand water heater might help me save
money and conserve energy, but it could be a hassle adjusting to the flow rate limitations
and, like most people these days, I don't have time for more hassles.

Once I got into things like Solar water heaters, Tankless Coil and Indirect
Water Heaters among others, I admit that I started to overload on the
information. I started learning about determining capacity, rating efficiency
and it all just got really fuzzy from there... Once I finally recovered from
the imformation overload, I decided that I really needed a licensed plumber to
help. The prefessional service technicians Tiger Plumbing Services really
knows water heaters and can help me select the perfect choice to meet my family's needs.
In fact, unlike the big box home improvement stores, they may even be able to make a small
repair to my existing unit, giving it extended life and improved efficiency.
Hiring a licensed plumber to help select the right water heater for my needs and
professional installation ensures that I have hot water when I want it and where
it is needed.

Now, I can go back to writing blogs and rest easy knowing that the hot water
remains what it is now; not something I think about.

For more detailed information on types of water heaters and help on determining your needs, visit:
www.tigerplumbingservices.com/webapp/GetPage?pid=146#ixzz0qNpGoOju

Low Flow to Increase Your Cash Flow

Tired of banging on the bathroom door, policing the amount of water being used

while family members take a shower? Does your frustration max out while your

teenage daughter takes 30 minute showers? Does your family suddenly have other

plans for family dinner on the day the water bill comes? If you answered yes to

any of these questions, you may suffer from a condition known as

hydro•flow•itis. Ok, we made that word up, but your condition, while requiring

ongoing supervision, can be treated with implementation of some cost saving

remedies. Your prognosis is very good and we recommend the following treatment

for saving water, helping the environment, and SAVING you $$!

Install a Low Flow Shower Head

What is a Low Flow Showerhead you ask? A low-flow shower head is a water-saving shower head that produces water at 2.5 gallons per minute or less at normal household pressure. There are low-flow showerheads that produce as little as 1.6 GPM. A 10-minute shower with a low flow showerhead uses only 16 to 25 gallons of

water.

You should know that showerheads flow rates are measured by the number of
gallons of water they produce per minute (GPM). Flow is determined by water
pressure as well as the design of the showerhead. Typical shower heads deliver 5
to 8 gallons per minute at average household pressure. A ten-minute shower uses
50 to 80 gallons of water. No wonder you are paying so much!

There are two kinds of low flow shower heads. Aerating showerheads mix air into
the water. Mixing in air helps to maintain a constant water pressure.
Non-aerating showerheads produce a very strong spray, because there is no air
mixed in with the water. One quarter of household water usage is shower usage.
Using low flow showerheads reduces the consumption of water dramatically while
maintaining steady and comfortable water pressure. Think of an aerating shower
head as a steady, comfortable rain coming down. Bliss.

By installing a low flow showerhead in your bathroom, you will help the
environment by conserving water consumption, you will save money on your water
bills, and you can finally maintain a good quality of life by managing your
hydro•flow•itis. Your family will definitely thank you!

The service technicians at Tiger Plumbing Services are fully trained and
experienced in the install of low flow shower heads.
